At first, the account here was just for reading others’ posts and getting them emailed to me. I might have started that way on Twitter. But before long, the blank box started calling.
So let me lay out what I’m not doing here: Journalism or paywalls, at least not yet. I’ve been behind the scenes in regional journalism for 30 years now, but other that a year as a night cops reporter, I’ve barely written. Coming out of my campus work, I had a fairly robust set of writing skills developed. I could bang out a staff editorial with all the help of my co-workers echoing “Cut. And. Dry.” But when I became a headline writer, page designer and jack of all trades, somehow one of those trades wasn’t writing. For the past couple decades, the writing had slowed to an annual Christmas letter or social posts.
No more. I have to recognize that I was inspired by co-worker Michael Rand and his effort to use Substack for personal writing. I hear good writers borrow and great writers steal, so I’m halfway there!
So what might you find here? Some reminiscing … some ‘90s nostalgia, like the headline to this piece … some of my own processing. When you work so much inside your head, it’s hard to stop thinking about everything. Only recently, perhaps while staring at this blank box, did I realize that I used to write to help deal with some of that. And you might get some thoughts about my areas of interest: Media, books, sports, middle age dad life. And hopefully, more.
